A NEW BEGINNING… In the Annuls of History few leave a mark. Some names stand out, but most vanish into obscurity and the ash of time shows no trace of their existence. So I ask you… When you pass from this place, what will you take with you, and what will you leave behind? Will you take with you a deep resonant pride in your accomplishments? Will you leave behind a lasting legacy to your life? The simple fact is, few will have ever done anything to make their own life outstanding in any way what-so-ever. The general thinking is "I can't make a difference, so I won’t even try…" The net result is a society of slugs who behave more like parasites than free thinking, courageous Human Beings. You can't make a difference as a slug…But you can as a Human! We may not know their names, but we all remember the convictions and passion that drove the brave few who withstood the bulldozers and the authorities at the Franklin River. That stand by the brave few created a whole new awareness in Australia, one that demanded government pay attention to ecology. And now, decades later, another milestone has been passed in the environmental movement. Recently a small group of individuals with deep convictions stood against the might of government and won. It is a remarkable tale… the Story of the Timbarra Blockade. Finally, for the first time in History, protestors and environment campaigners have withstood the greatest bastion of environmental destruction… The Mining Company. And they WON! It has never been known to happen before. Never has a bunch of peasants (As the authorities would have us consider the environmental campaigners) withstood the might and the politics of the Mining Cartels. During the tense and heated battles through 1998 and 1999, near the small town of Tenterfield New South Wales, Australia the stage was set for a climactic warning to be shot over the bows of all mining companies who defy the Environment in the pursuit of Gold. Kids… Mostly just kids. Some deep instinct in their blood said that this was wrong, and they walked the bush, camped in the wild, suffered deprivation, and withstood the Police in order to just say NO to what was happening on the Sacred Site of the Timbarra plateau. The clashes were brutal. The Police used strong arm tactics, grinding protesters faces into the dirt, breaking arms and legs … and for what? To support the right for a private company to use cyanide in a pristine environment. It was brutal and uncalled for action against demonstrators, and it failed. The miners lost. The police lost… The peasants won. It is a telling tale that this is the very first time in history that such an event has occurred. Despite the Government support, despite the law and the money being against the chosen few who simply stood up for what they believed… Despite all the opposition those brave ones who stood firm managed to turn the tide, and the Gold Mine has all but closed down. At least for the present, the good guys have won. The story is not over… It is not finished. The Gold Mine is still there, if dysfunctional at present… But the protest allowed the force of nature itself to take hold, and with the expense and pain of the conflict, combined with the Acts of God that seemed to continually against the Miners… The mine is effectively ceased for the present. This is a tale of that journey, but far more than this, it is a tale of WHY this journey exists… What drove the people, and who stood behind it. We are looking at this story largely through the eyes of those who stood there to make it happen, yet also through the eyes of a particular Man ... Rusty Harris, long term resident of Nimbin, the alternative capital of Australia. Rusty, complete with dreadlocks and an attitude of distrust towards all things belonging to the Government, is a symbol of all that Timbarra stood for. More than this, Rusty represents something of the new body of thought that has arisen in that "renegade" capital of the Alternative Society… Nimbin. This book looks at some of the personal journey of Rusty Harris, and in looking through this, perhaps you will find something in your own journey that will inspire you to greater heights. Rusty is a modern day elder of the Earth Tribe. Because of his position and his influence, he was asked by the Aboriginal Elder, David Mundine, to go to Timbarra and help save the sacred site. This he has done … Now this task is completed he has his story to tell and he has asked for his voice to be heard. Why? He wants to reach out to you, to touch you. In trust, he reaches out his thoughts and waits for you to receive what you will from them. In hope he prays that you too will be activated enough to seek to rise out of the hum drum, the nine to five, and to look to secure a spiritual resolve that will help you to create a better world. A better world for us, for our children, and for our children's children. The back drop of the spectacular and violent Timbarra protests form the landscape of what much of this book is about… But we also seek to go beyond this trials and tribulations of the few, beyond their eventual success. We are looking to look through the eyes of the present to rediscover a potential we have in ourselves, a future where the Earth is a Garden, not a wasteland. We look to a place in this present moment where we discover in our heart that there is a simple truth… That our pure water is more precious than the gold the greedy covet, and would do anything to obtain. It seems so simple to say it. Water is more precious than Gold, and yet as we say these words we are defying thousands of years of western tradition. But more and more, as we peel beneath the veneer of the so called righteous governments, we see clearly the skin is thin. And all it covers are commercial interests… Not the interest of the people. Rusty Harris has a message for all you good folk, at least to those of you who want to listen. You have value! You are a Human, and you have Value. You, and your children are the rightful inheritors of the Earth, and all the bastardry and convivience from the money cartels cannot rob you of your birthright… Unless you let them. This Book is YOUR Call This book is the way Rusty Harris, and those like him, are calling to you … Are you prepared to set aside the snide prejudice and comfortable mediocrity you have settled into in order to listen? It was this very question that made me question whether it was worth while writing this book. I know how so many think… Which is to say, most do NOT think… they merely recite the incantations they have been taught by society and government… Behave… Go to work… earn money… get a mortgage… get married… have children… go to school. We all know the litany. The Litany of the Bored. I know this sad song rules most people's hearts… I know most of you have ever done a single thing that is truly worthwhile in your entire lives. So why would you change? I personally have doubts you are able to. I personally doubt you have the courage to face your demons of conformity and look change in the face… But somehow Rusty Harris believes in you. Somehow Rusty Harris seems to think that there are people out there in the society of the dull that are worth talking to. And so, on behalf of Rusty Harris, and maybe on behalf of that small part of me that is not entirely jaded with the human race, we offer you this book. If you read it with your eyes open, I can promise you that amazing change will begin to take root and grow in your heart. If you come to a Rainbow Gathering, and touch the energy of the wild, natural people that are becoming more and more their OWN society, then you too will be encouraged to get off that mill wheel of mortgage and conformity… And maybe then you will find something of worth inside yourself. In all honesty… I doubt it. I can look into your eyes, and see that Soul of Truth struggling to swim in the tides of your fear… And mostly I see you, the real you, drowning in there. You. Dear reader, though you will hate me for saying this, are generally not anything I would like to sit and talk with. Why? Because you have never thought for yourself. You have never dug and mined the inner being to discover something of value… That secret Soul of your Being remains buried in trite acceptance of the mediocre and banal unquestioning rationales. Personally, I don't think a lot of you. Your potential is meaningless to me, because I know you will never reach it. And then Rusty Harris comes along. Rusty is enthusiasm, Rusty is in his Fifties and still doing cartwheels, still raising children, still living life on his own terms. Rusty never conformed to the norms of society and for some reason he believes in you. He believes enough to ask for this book to be written… And remember… It is being written for YOU. Rusty doesn't need you… he already has a full life. I certainly don’t need you… Don’t come knocking on my door. But if in the reading of this book a light goes "A-ha!" in your mind. If in the reading of this book you realise you cannot bear the constraints and fears in which you have been both wittingly and unwittingly living inside … Then maybe you will finally choose to change. Maybe then you will finally choose to be a HUMAN rather than a mere robot in the inconsequent drivel that frames our modern existence. Personally, I doubt if you have the gumption. I doubt you have the balls to be different, to stand up and be counted. Certainly, I didn’t see you at the Timbarra protests, and I can't recall you at anything of note, other than the odd night at the movies. I can't see any great works of art done by your hands, nor anything so much as an indignant letter to the editor. Let's face it… You, dear Reader, are bone idle. You push a pen for a living? That's not living. You dream of being great in some way? That's not greatness. You want others to admire and respect you? What have you done to earn it? You want a loving partner? What have you done besides serve yourself, in order to deserve this? But Rusty believes in you. Rusty believes that if you can be but taken out of the metronome you live in, and brought into a society of alternative views you will discover immediate change… He believes you can be salvaged and made Human … Like you once were. But that was when you were a child. I would like to apologise if I have offended you, dear reader… But the truth is, if you CAN be offended by these simple words… Then they are probably true. Well… Are you going to read this book? If you do, you will find a wild, eclectic collection of stories and experiences. I have tried to piece together a ménage a multiplex of views and feeling and thoughts for you to consider… All loosely based around the simple directive Rusty gave me when writing this book… LET'S LOOK AT JUMPING TO THE YEAR 50,000 He said quite simply… "People have to stop looking at today or tomorrow… People need to go straight to the consciousness of the year 50,000. Forget the new millennium, it is just a copy of the last… Let's go straight to a point where there is a perfection of BEing in the Human race… the year 50,000 ! "Now I know this is a figure of speech, btu the point is, why sit with the past and all the habits. Why not stretch out and see a life as it MIGHT be when all the pain and suffering is worn out... Why not stretch your wings and fly to greater freedom... Because if you don;t ... No one else will do it for you. "The Earth is meant to be a Garden. When people realise how important this simple truth is, they will change how they act. "Water is more precious than Gold… When people realise this, they will loosen their greed and lust, and look about at the natural values that have existed before man ever walked this planet. "There are those who WANT to help us… But we need to open the heart and the mind, and let these Souls in. These are the Golden Ones… I have seen them. They have come and they have spoken to me. They have asked for this message to be given out. We need the Golden Children… I have seen it… I know it to be truth. "We have Golden Beings, Children of Light, who want to come to this planet to help us… But they cannot come until the path is made ready for them. This is our personal responsibility… to purify our minds and hearts, and to purify the land itself. To make the inner and outer soil fertile so that they wonderful Children can come and show us the way to the next level of our being. "We falter on the brink… We falter on the realm of the unconscious control of the money people… We need to break free.. to become ourselves… to be FREE." Rusty Harris believes in you. Can you find it in your heart to listen to his story with the heart for just a moment? How going one step further and starting to believe in yourself? Read this book… It was inspired by what some call the "antics" of Rusty Harris with the sole purpose of (hopefully) inspiring you. There is a family of mad crazy eccentrics who never quite adjusted their beliefs to align with the "normal" society. It is a culture of difference. This culture is waiting for you with open arms… A family of people who have chosen a different path than the norms of society. You can be a part… You just have to open your heart to the love, and you will hear your family calling you. Just open up, allow a little love to shine, and then sit back and watch the miracles happen.
