These Patterns under describe many of the essential Major/Minor Modulations that evolve from the Diatonic Scale.

If you grasp this, you are doing well. Essentially, the bottom "wheel" is the Mode that can be "dialed" around to fit against the existing Ionic Pattern that extrapolates from the Key, or Tonic, Note.

I saw this Pattern in 1988, and didn't fully understand it. Likewise, it may take some time for you to grasp the simplicity, and the complexity of this simple diagram.
